We’re inviting Nigerians everywhere to revisit their albums, camera rolls and communities to rediscover the moments that connect their lives to ours; and share your moment with us. 80 remarkable moments will be recognised and rewarded, and become part of our NB@80 anniversary story.

Major milestones of Nigerian Breweries and Nigeria. Scroll through our milestones.

In 1946, UAC and HEINEKEN signed a contract for the incorporation of Nigerian Brewery Limited in Lagos. This is how the journey to the making of a world-class company began.

On 2nd of June, 1949, the first Nigerian brewed bottle of beer rolled off the bottling line in Iganmu.

In 1954, we reached the milestone of one million cartons, refreshing over 60% of Nigeria’s lager beer consumption. This landmark was achieved as the new ABA Brewery came to life.

The year of independence (1960) came with new aspirations as the company undertook production of new brands; Schweppes, Heineken, Gulder & Roses.

As the expansion continued, we solidified our position as the pace setter in the beverage industry with a third brewery (1964) in the then Northern Nigeria capital city of Kaduna.

In 1976, as we celebrated the 30th anniversary as a company, the first bottle of the first locally produced Malt drink rolled off the Kaduna Brewery.

The 1990s started with the company’s name being changed to Nigerian Breweries Plc. On the 1st of June 1992, LEGEND was born, a specially formulated stout with rich texture long lasting and pleasant flavour.

Introduced as ‘the top of the very top’ Amstel Malta was launched in 1994.

The Nigerian Breweries–Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund was established in 1994, committing the company to Nigerian education for the long term.

“Ama Brewery is a world-class brewery by all standards with the best of cutting-edge technology and a crop of highly skilled and trained workforce. Ama Brewery is not only the flagship of Nigerian Breweries Plc, it is indeed a jewel in the crown of Heineken.”Anthony Ruys, Chairman, Executive Board of Heineken 2002–2005

In furtherance of our long-standing commitment to the Nigerian market, Sona and Life Breweries (2011) and Consolidated Breweries (2014) acquisitions were made bringing into the NB fold these great brands.

In 2015, the Maltina Teacher of the Year award began celebrating the Nigerian teachers shaping the next generation.

At 75 we shone even brighter, with over 19 brands in our portfolio brewed from 9 state-of-the-art factories and 1 malting plant refreshing Nigeria and Nigerians 24/7, 365 days a year.

The acquisition of Distell in 2023 brought a new range of wines and spirits into the Nigerian Breweries portfolio.

Eighty years on, we are still the pioneer and largest brewing company in Nigeria, and still brewing for the moments Nigerians share. This anniversary belongs to the people who have made that story with us.
